Final stages of the interview! Prevent skill mismatch – Questions to ask

In the previous article, the importance of adjusting expectations and offers in the last stages of an interview was discussed. However, many may wonder specifically what questions should be asked and what explanations should be made to make such adjustments. This is especially so for recruiters not part of a company’s Human Resources team as the adjustment may not go well. This second article in the series will explain what to be aware of when asking questions to adjust expectations.

Asking questions to adjust expectations and offers

In the overview, three points to ask about were brought up.

① Position sought

② Salary sought

③ Other expectations such as working conditions

When asking questions about each of these topics, keep the following things in mind.

① Position sought

Confirm with the candidate specifically what position they sought when applying for the job. If the candidate is employed without noticing the difference in expectations and actual duties, it can lead to resignation immediately after entering the company.

② Salary sought

Ask what salary the candidate expects, including gross income, net income, and bonuses. If there is a gap between what the candidate seeks and what the company can offer, there is a need for negotiation or explanation. In such cases, examples of the current market condition (especially trends in salary) and other employees who have similar abilities and experience will allow the candidate to be more easily convinced.

③ Other expectations such as working conditions

Ask what working hours and location. Also ask about their image of the work atmosphere and explain what the company’s work atmosphere is like to fill in the gap they may feel after entering the company.

These are the three points to keep in mind when asking questions to adjust expectations and offers. Endeavor to explain the realistic offer from the company after hearing their answers and be understood so the candidate does not feel what they see is different from what they expected after being employed.
